A Special Day
September 15th was an unusual day at One Write. Over a quarter of our employees were absent! However, it wasn’t an outbreak of swine flu or trouble of any kind. It was actually a good thing. About a dozen people had volunteered to work as a part of Community Care Day.
This was the thirteenth annual such event organized by United Way of Fairfield County. It mobilizes volunteers to assist those in need throughout the area. This year 284 people worked at over forty different sites.
Our group was assigned work projects at Geneva Hills. It is an amazing place. Originally a church camp, it is situated on 342 acres in the Hocking Hills south of Lancaster. It is now an independent organization partnering with the community to provide camps and outdoor educational experiences for children and adults.
The day was a perfect one and the hours went by quickly. Our teams joined others as we painted, cleaned the buildings, cleared brush from the campsites and even got to use our chainsaws to take down and cut up trees damaged by the summer storms. We were all spent by the end of the day but many people were already talking about next year.
The work of giving back to the community has a great reward. It is a sense of satisfaction that can’t be fully explained. We were grateful to be a part of Community Care Day.
